How Does OrthoK Work?
Ortho-K uses specially designed tailor made rigid gas permeable contact lenses which are worn only at night. Once the full effect has taken place, the eye is effectively ‘normal’ and can see clearly during the day.
Ortho K works because the contact lenses have been made to the exact specifications of your own corneas, using computer generated maps, the digital images of which, have been sent to a computerised lathe. The lens produced will match the vision correction required exactly. No more, no less.
Gradually and very gently your corneas are re-shaped whilst you sleep. After the initial few days you wake up, remove the lenses and you can see normally without needing to put on any spectacles or contact lenses.
Unlike corneal refractive surgery the process is fully reversible. If you stop wearing Ortho K lenses for between 5-10 days your corneas will return to the pre-treated shape and you will be able to use your old vision corrections again.
