Types of Contact Lenses
At Spectrum Eyecare we fit all types of contact lenses.
The most popular are Soft daily wear re-usable contact lenses. They can also be made from Rigid Gas Permeable or Silicone Hydrogel materials.
Soft Contact Lenses
Are made from hydrogel polymers, they absorb water making the lenses very comfortable to wear. The water in the lens allows oxygen to reach the front surface of the eye to maintain healthy corneas.
Becoming more popular are the Silicone Hydrogel Soft contact lenses, because they allow even more oxygen to reach the eye.
Soft contact lenses are available to fit most prescriptions from simple distance vision, to those with Astigmatism, Bifocal and Multifocal corrections.
Rigid Gas Permeable
These are oxygen permeable lenses made from a more rigid polymer. They are smaller than the soft lenses and generally allow an easier passage for oxygen to reach the cornea.Initially rigid gas permeable lenses take longer to adapt to compared to soft contact lenses.
Because the material is more rigid than soft contact lens material, they can correct more complex prescriptions.
A great variety of spectacle prescriptions can be made in Rigid Gas Permeable lenses, for example Astigmatism, Bifocal, Multifocal and Keratoconic corrections.
Our very special Ortho K lens is made in gas permeable material.
The variety of different contact lens types has never been as good as it is today.
The manufacturers continue to develop new materials and designs to allow more and more people to enjoy the freedom that wearing a contact lens gives.
If you have told in the past that contact lenses were unsuitable for you, now is the time to ask again. You will be pleasantly surprised at just how many people thought the same as you and are now wearing contact lenses successfully.
